A companion piece to "Black Priestess". Iphigenia won the Sir Otto Beit Medal for Sculpture in 1962, from the Royal Society of British Sculptors, as the best work of the year publicly exhibited in the British Isles and Commonwealth (outside of London).

The medal was presented in a ceremony at Government House, Victoria.

In a letter Nov. 28, 1962, Charles Comfort, Director, National Gallery of Canada, wrote: “You will recall that M. Jean-Paul Riopelle won the UNESCO award at the Venice Biennale this year. Now you have been honoured by the Royal Society of British Sculptors, a very great distinction and one of which we all at the National Gallery are proud to learn.”
